Medicare Elections Periods
The Medicare Open Enrollment period is from October 15th to December 7th for those enrolled in Medicare A and B and live in the plan's service area. Plans include: MAPD's - Advantage plans and PDP's - prescription drug plans.
Common Medicare Election Periods
For those over the age of 65 and enrolled in Medicare A and B.
1 – Initial Coverage Election Period (ICEP) and Initial Election Period (IEP)
ICEP and IEP occur when you first become eligible for Medicare, whether it’s due to turning 65 or a qualifying disability. You can enroll in an Medicare Supplement Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan (MAPD). Those already enrolled in Medicare due to disability have a second IEP when they turn 65. Based on eligibility criteria and election choices, ICEP and IEP may occur together or separately.
2 - Annual Election Period (AEP) - AEP runs from 10/15 – 12/7.
Medicare enrollees can change or add a Medicare Prescription Drug plan (PDP), change their Medicare Advantage (MAPD) plan, return to Original Medicare, or enroll in an MAPD plan for the first time, even if you did not enroll during your Initial Election Period.
3 - Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period (MADP) - The MADP occurs from 1/1 - 2/14.
During the MADP disenrollment period, beneficiaries can disenroll from their MA plan and return to Original Medicare.
4 - Special Election Period (SEP)
A Special Election Period lets beneficiaries change their election. The qualifications to use SEPs and the types of elections allowed vary. Situations such as dual-eligible status and institutionalization let beneficiaries switch plans at any time during the year. SEPs are determined and announced by CMS.
